Hermes in the Making is an introduction to Hermès artisans and the house’s sustainable and responsible business model. Hermès objects are designed to last, to be repaired and passed on. Artisans of the house’s métiers have brought their tools, materials and expert gestures from their workshops to Singapore to explain how these objects are crafted.
Their work reflects preservation and passing on the quest for quality, durability, innovation and respect for the environment.

A Culture of Traditional Craftsmanship
Since the creation of Hermès in 1837, the six generations of craftsmen who have succeeded each other in the workshops have preserved and nurtured their know-how. The repertoire of craftsmanship skills is vibrant and continually growing.

High Quality Materials from Regional Talent
Kaolin, stone, straw, wood, leather, silk, horn – whether of mineral, plant or animal origin, these exceptional materials are exalted by Hermès artisans.
Hermès has established its production facilities in regions that have long-standing specific know-how, such as silk in Lyon, glove-making in Haute-Vienne, and porcelain in Limousin.

Time as an Ally
Ever in motion and bearing witness to the world as it evolves, time is the force that makes the trees grow, propels the earth around the sun and orchestrates the ballet of seasons. At the same time, it remains invisible, transient, furtive and unpredictable. At Hermès, time is respected and treated as an ally. Artisans require years of training to master intricate manual skills while several days are required to craft a Vivace saddle or a Kelly bag, created to last and repaired to be handed down as heirloom.
