It was a rainy afternoon when I made my way to Duxton to get my first pair of Birkenstock sandals in a decade. Learning that this year marks Birkenstock’s 250th anniversary, I remembered how much my previous pairs meant to me and I figured it was high time I get my next pair of Birkenstock, to mark entering my new era.
Settled within a row of two-storey heritage shophouses in the neighbourhood, is The House of Birkenstock, the first of it’s kind in Southeast Asia.

The House of Birkenstock combines its rich history and craftsmanship in shoe-making with Singapore’s local culture merging elements such as Peranakan design wooden furnishing, paper lanterns and vintage tiles.

Birkenstock Waterfall Wall

As you enter, you will be in awe at the aesthetics and jaw-dropping 6 meter high waterfall wall within the boutique! It features fengshui elements with cascading water trickling into a pond and plants accompanied by the iconic Birkenstock foot bed to symbolise prosperity.

The House of Birkenstock also works as a gallery displaying plagues with old photos and information about it’s history as you try on the footwear. It’s also the first-ever store in Southeast Asia to carry the 1774 range, an exclusive line of footwear that showcases Birkenstock various collaborations.

Work Station

Besides just shopping for sandals, The House of Birkenstock also offers exclusive services such as personalisation and repair services for new and existing Birkenstock owners which is great for sustainability and that I can wear my pair for much longer.

As a long-time fan of Birkenstock, I was thoroughly moved to have purchased my latest Madrid sandals (in the colour I wanted way back then) from The House of Birkenstock.
It was truly a memorable experience, not just shopping here in an actual shophouse, but to be able to wander around reading its history, try the exclusive pieces that I have never personally seen (1774 range) and to soak in the zen atmosphere, it felt incredible for this history geek; like all the stars aligned and it was the right time to literally walk me through the next stages in my personal journey.
