I’m back with another review of a massage parlour but this time, I’m trying traditional Chinese reflexology at Yi Zhen Reflexology, a small homely parlour located at the heart of Bishan with the help of Jess (whatjess1023).
The Art of Chinese Foot Reflexology
Chinese Reflexology is an ancient art and is believed that pressure points on the feet corresponds to different parts of the body. Early evidence of Chinese Reflexology dates back to the 2nd century BC, when Dr Yu Fu treated his patients without the use of herbs but concentrated solely on massage. Chinese reflexology can improve blood circulation and support the immune system. The Chinese believe it restores the body’s balance of ‘Yin and Yang, encourages healing and strengthens the body. It is much more than just a foot massage, it is a powerful treatment and advice to go for a foot massage once every month to improve your health.
What to Expect
At Yi Zhen, the therapist are from China specialise and trained to give deep tissue massage. Before your massage begins, your feet will be soaked in warm water for a few minutes. Once ready, the masseur will wrap your foot with a warm towel for improved circulation. Firm pressure and sweeping movements are used on the reflex points of the feet in Chinese Reflexology so it may be painful especially for first timers but you can ask for gentler pressure. You can refer to the chart above for particularly painful areas to see which part of your body needs more attention.
So what did I feel about the foot massage? It’s a weird feeling of pain, goodness and relief at the same time! After my 40 minute foot massage, I got a 30 minute body massage. You can choose to go for dry massage (no essential oil) or with essential oils. The essential oils here are made specially by Yi Zhen’s lady boss and are even sold at the parlour.
Aroma Essential Oils (250ml)
Roman Chamomile $140
Prior to my massage, my shoulders were aching badly and I was feeling bloated (indication that my period was coming). I was glad I chose to use essential oils for my massage as there was a lot of kneading and pullling of the skin on my back but it relieved my aches and that bloated feeling. Do note though that you will be required to take off your top.
Overall, I felt the massages I had at Yi Zhen were really thorough and good. During my time there, they had quite a number of customers and we were all greeted by name and talked like old friends which felt very personal and showed the level of trust between the customers for their theraphists. It is very convenient for those staying in Bishan to have regular massages but for those within the area who would like to try traditional Chinese massage, you’d be glad to know that it is very easy to locate Yi Zhen Reflexology as it is just a 3 minutes walk from Bishan MRT (beside the MRT Station).
