The Istana opened its doors to the public on 30th July 2016 to celebrate the upcoming National Day so my dear Sulastri and I decided to plan a little girlie picnic together complete with a picnic basket, sun hats and our favourite treats.
Here are the picnic food that we packed:
- Rainbow Pudding – prepared by Susu (she made them herself!).
- Salted Egg Yolk Pasta – prepared by Susu (pass as housewife).
- Evian Mineral Water 1500ml – bought from NTUC.
- Twelve Cupcakes – Rainbow Vanilla, Red Velvet, Double Choc Chip.
- Antoinette Macaroons – Violette, Chloe, Rose.
Note: Sharp objects (eg. knives and forks), flammable items (eg. lighters), alcohol and pets are NOT ALLOWED in the premises of the Istana. We used plastic spoons to eat our food.
We were really blessed to have a nice warm weather for our picnic after days of constant rain. Prior to our visit, we were quite worried that it would rain. Thank God we got to enjoy the sun and breeze. After a whole afternoon of wedding talk, we went to explore the Istana grounds.
Upon arriving at the main building, we joined in the festivities by watching a live band performance by Queenstown Secondary School and went on a self-guided tour in the main building itself! Unfortunately, no photography is allowed inside the building (no, we did not sneakily take any pictures either because we are law-abiding like that). We got to see the table set up of state functions, the architecture, many jaw-dropping gifts by various foreign ministers and sovereign and local art-pieces.
Time just flies by when you’re having fun. And it always does with this girl. It really helps that Susu and I
are geeks have the same kind of love for museums, history and each other.
The Istana is opened on these days every year:
- Chinese New Year
- Labour Day
- National Day
- Hari Raya Puasa

It really was a lovely day with great food, great weather and great company. Although we got many adoring stares for skipping around with our picnic basket and people thinking that we stuffed our pet cat in it, I really had fun. More picnics together and definitely more #2017bride moments.
